The Keen Shot's Miscellany- Peter Holt

The ideal stocking-filler for anyone who shoots. The Keen Shot's Miscellany is a collection of three hundred entries on the subject of game shooting past and present. Articles range from short snippets containing irresistible information such as the fact that a shotgun should weigh 6 pounds for every ounce of shot it is likely to fire, to one thousand words on the sculptor Sir Francis Chatrey's right and left of woodcock with one barrel, the most talked about shooting event of early Victorian Britain.

THE AUTHOR

Peter Holt is a former Fleet Street journalist who spent a large part of his career writing a pop column for London's Evening Standard during the 1980s.  His previous books include In Clive's Footsteps, The Big Muddy and Stars of India. These days Holt runs his family property in Shropshire, whilst spending much of the winter months shooting.

Reviews:

This book is essential reading. Over three hundred entries on the subject of game shooting past and present.  Lots of quirky facts and tit-bits.'

'Essential reading. Over 300 entries on the subject of game shooting past and present. Lots of quirky tales, facts and tit-bits. A very impressive title- well researched and entertainingly written.'

'Holt's book draws from a bewildering array of sources to assemble seemingly random data for the shooter's entertainment and enlightenment.'

'Quirky facts to bring up at the shoot lunch.'

'The Miscellany has been enormously successful in recent years, and it was only going to be a matter of time before we saw one for shooting. If you like this sort of book, then you will love this. The book has something in it to interest anyone with even a passing interest in shooting. Buy it for a heart warming laugh after a cold day in the field.'

'Following the well-established format of miscellanies this is a wonderful pot pourri of the bizarre, the hilarious and the utterly fascinating.  There is also much useful information and some genuine pearls of wisdom - lady guns will particularly enjoy Sir Joseph Nickerson's shrewd comment; 'A lady begins to know she is shooting well when the men stop telling her that she is. While Captain Horatio Ross's feat of shooting 20 swallows with a flintlock pistol may not evoke our admiration it certainly stirs the sense of wonder, as do so many things in this perfect bedside or bogside companion. The ideal stocking-filler for anyone who shoots.'
